I just started going to the gym and noticed that some people there don’t mind the sweat left on the equipment by others. I’m tempted to sanitise them before I exercise. Am I being paranoid? - Jacinta, 20 PDF Print E-mail

Sweating in the gym is normal, but some experience it more than others. Those who sweat a lot will expel a lot of microbes, some of which will end up on the machines. No, you are not being paranoid. It’s actually good practice to wipe down the equipment before using them. Most gyms provide antibacterial sprays which you can use to do a quick clean-up anyway so it’s perfectly alright to do that.

On a separate note, be sure to remove your sweaty clothes soon after exercising to avoid bacterial infection on your skin. Wash your gym wear thoroughly on the same day and dry them out in the sun.
