My bones tend to pop loudly, especially when I bend over or kneel down. Why does this happen and should I be worried? – Sandi, 19 PDF Print E-mail

The cracking and popping of bones is usually normal. There are two theories as to why the joints of our bones make that cracking sound.

Firstly, there are nitrogen bubbles in the fluid inside our joints that cause the “pop” sound when the joint is moved or manipulated, for instance, cracking your knuckles. For some people, when the bubble pops, it feels like tension is released and their joints are loosened.

The other theory is that our ligaments make the cracking noises when our joints move, i.e. snapping and moving around the joint.

For most people, the popping does not pose any problems, but should you experience painful joints, swelling or the joints lose their function, that’s when medical intervention is necessary.
