My boyfriend is overweight. I know people have told him to lose weight, but it has not made any difference. How do I encourage him to work out more? - Tashna, 22 |

He may agree that exercise is important but may not do anything about it. So, try some positive reinforcement! The key is to motivate him without being pushy. Tell him how much more attractive he’d look if he dropped a few more pounds. Subtly drop hints about the importance of exercise, and how being fit can boost confidence and self-esteem. Leave brochures and leaflets about weight loss, fitness, exercise and health lying around where you know he will see them. You could even buy him a men’s fitness or bodybuilding magazine and pass it to him, casually saying that it has some good articles. Images and pictures are powerful motivators, and seeing toned, fit bodies may move him to want to achieve the same thing for himself.
| If possible, offer to exercise with him! You can suggest starting a fitness regimen together by going to the gym. That way, you can be a constant source of encouragement and support to one another, and you’ll both feel better about yourselves once those results start to show. So go along with him, do some research about fitness and gyms and get him signed up (and sign up yourself if you want).
Once he starts exercising, remember to notice the improvements, however small, and compliment them. Say how great he’s looking, how much weight he’s lost, how toned and great his body looks. Give him enthusiastic, positive feedback. Be encouraging and pay him lots of attention. Chances are, he’ll be so flattered and eager to please that he will keep up the good work!
