My job involves entertaining clients, but I don’t consume alcohol for personal reasons. How can I refrain from consuming it yet still maintain rapport when socialising? - Siew Yee, 25 PDF Print E-mail

This can be tricky, but you have to be honest with them. You should not have to do something that goes against your principles or personal beliefs. However, there are ways you can still bond with people (in this case, your clients) even if you don't take alcohol.

When you order your drinks, casually place your order with the rest. If anyone questions your choice, expresses disbelief or suggests that you should order an alcoholic beverage, give them a big, cheery smile and sweetly say that you don’t drink, or any make up any other suitable excuse.

Some people may insist and persist on trying to change your mind; however, the key is to be consistent. Keep that smile on your face; laugh or be a little flirtatious if you want, but say the same thing each time, every single time. After a few attempts, people will most likely accept it and stop pushing you. If they don’t, just laugh gently, shake your head with a smile and change the subject. Smiling as you subtly decline something makes a lot of difference, as it takes the sting out of rejection.

Remember to socialise, talk and laugh with the same level of energy and enthusiasm (or more) as the rest. Smile more, laugh more, be jovial, chatty and bubbly so that people will realise that you do not really need the alcohol to loosen up and have a good time.
