How do I negotiate a pay rise without being too aggressive? – Tasha, 24 PDF Print E-mail

Asking for a pay rise affects everyone from time to time. It can be difficult and if it doesn’t come out right, it might backfire and lead to frustration and dissatisfaction. That said, there is no fixed way to ask – some write or email, discuss informally with the superior, hint, talk with colleagues in hopes that the manager will hear, threaten to resign and so on. However, it is always best to do this face-to-face or if you’re nervous, you can write and keep it simple.
Pay rise

The key here is to plan and be in control. Find out about the current market rates in your field so you can have facts to back you up and avoid discussions based on personal opinion or emotion. This might not bring immediate or the intended results but it is better than doing nothing or doing it wrongly.

Ask to meet your manager to discuss your responsibilities and remuneration. During the meeting, do ask about:

  • the opportunities available and the process for you to improve your salary package
  • the rationale behind setting and increasing pay levels
  • who your manager would need to make a case to and will he/she support it
  • what would improve your case
  • what commitments would the company expect of you

During the discussion, the most positive approach would be to ask for more work and responsibilities. This way you can link it to having your salary increased instead of asking employers to give you a higher pay for doing the same job.

Another way that employers appreciate is to ask for performance-related bonus or incentive if you agree to achieve greater than expected/current results. Again, you are asking for a pay rise in exchange for working harder and giving back to the company.
