I always get confused and don’t know how to differentiate between tights, pantyhose and leggings. Please enlighten me! – Jacelyn, 23 PDF Print E-mail

Tights and pantyhose are basically the same thing. Both cover your feet completely (as can be seen in the picture on the right) but they differ in terms of thickness. Leggings, on the other hand, don’t cover all the way to your feet and are much thicker, so you can opt to wear it as pants.

The thickness of tights is measured by the weight and density of the yarn used to knit it. Called denier, it ranges from sheer (about 40 denier) to opaque (120 – 300 denier).

Both tights and leggings come in an assortment of patterns and styles. No longer are they just in solid black – you’ll see them in plaid, stripes, lace, flowers, ripped, neon-coloured, zipped, etc. Pick what strikes your fancy!

Then there are the wide range of materials to choose from (for leggings). Other than the ubiquitous cotton or Lycra, leggings now come in denim and PVC (aka liquid leggings) as well!

You can also experiment with various lengths for different occasions and see which suits you best – stirrups or saddle, ankle-length, calf-length and knee-length.
