I recently noticed that I have little white bumps around my eyes and scratching doesn’t get them off. What are they and how do I get rid of them? - Phoebe, 17 PDF Print E-mail

Those little white bumps are called milia or oil seeds. They are benign, keratin-filled cysts that commonly appear just under the epidermis or on the roof of the mouth. It is basically harmless protein trapped within your skin and thus harder to extract.

There are several reasons for milia to develop. Dermatologists suggest that one of it could be excessive exfoliation of the face, especially around the delicate eye area or the use of unsuitable moisturiser on the latter. It may also be a result of a high cholesterol diet.

It is quite difficult (and painful!) to get rid of milia on your own. The best is to consult a dermatologist or skin specialist who can help you extract the cysts properly. To prevent any milia from developing in the future, try exfoliating your face regularly (but not too frequently either) and do it gently. When using eye creams stick with a mild one with a fluid texture.
